Phil Gregor was held in such high regard by his fellow ex RAAF Communicators that I have been asked to put the content of an eMail received from John Richard's on the front page of our website

Hi Guys,

I attended the funeral of Phil Gregor (PG) 2SQN 1967-1968.

PG was with the first deployment of 2SQN to Phan Rang. He arrived just before the arrival of the Canberra Aircraft in Phan Rang. He helped establish the COMMCEN.

I was able to do some research on PG's RAAF Service. PG joined the RAAF at Australia House in April 1952. He had many postings within Australia and Overseas.

PG went to Korea soon after arriving in Australia. After Korea, he was posted to Malaya during the Emergency and the Confrontation with Indonesia. He then had several postings prior to his deployment to 2SQN. His last posting was with ATTU (Tactical Communications) based at Richmond. He was retired at the age of 55 in 1976.

Phil also saw war service with the RAF. Joining in 1939, he was demobbed in 1946.

PG was a well liked and respected member of the RAAF Communications family. His career suffered as a result of his determination to 'Look After' the young wipper snappers. He took responsiblity for acts committed by his troops. He never complained and was at his most happiest whilst serving with the RAAF. He was a real friend to all that met him. He will always a gentleman.

There were 12 people at his funeral, 5 of which were ex RAAF. Two of us from 2SQN attended. Ken Watts played the last post and revailee. Ken is a very good muso, one of the best Bugle players I have heard. I was asked to do the Eulogy. The Family wishes to pass on to the 2SQN Association their heartfelt thanks for the kind words on behalf of 2SQN Association.

PG had 2 Great Grandsons. I managed to dig up 2 not so perfect 2SQN Vietnam Caps (they were rejects with some imperfections) The kids were rapted. They even placed their hands on their hearts as the casket was moved. Very moving!

The family knew nothing much about PG's service history. They handed me 15 campagn medals and 3 citations. Most did not have ribbons and were not mounted. I have arranged for his son-in-law(Frank) to meet with the President of the Bathurst Sub-Branch RSL, who will arrange the mounting of his medals. I did note that he was missing a couple of medals. I have forwarded an application to Frank to apply for the missing medals.

JR

All the best!
Kero (Kerry Harrington)
